Out-door bronze sculpture is affected by the environment in which it is located. Sun and rain coupled with temperature and humidity will promote oxidation of the bronze alloy. Some of the other elements that can change or alter patinas are sprinkler systems, salt air off the ocean and sulfide pollution from car and industrial exhaust. In some areas, acid rain is a concern.

Original patinas ( oxides formed on the surface of the bronze ) and sealants such aswax and lacquers help to protect and maintain the desired color. Patinas tend to darken over time. Periodic cleaning and re-waxing will help stabilize the original patina.

The basic sculpture maintenance program includes cleaning with non-ionic or neutral detergent and waxing with specially formulated paste wax. Photographic and written reports are used to record condition and changes. Conservation measures to correct undesirable changes can be recommended and initiated when necssary.

Artworks of Fallbrook offers a periodic maintenance service which includes cleaning, waxing and record keeping that helps to ensure outdoor sculpture will maintain its original condition while mitigating the effect of its environment.

The initial consultation includes installation analysis, surface inspection and identification of existing potentially adverse conditions. In Southern California, this initial inspection is free and there is no obligation for future service. If a scheduled maintenance program is desired an estimate for this service will be provided.
